Clean Burning Diesel Arrives in SanFramento!
Jan 5, 2010
The Capitol Corridor rail line, which carries commuters from Auburn to San Jose, recently added a cleaner burning diesel locomotive engine to it’s fleet. Locomotive #2015 is the first in a new upgrade of passenger train locomotives to be fitted with technology that cuts the release of toxic diesel particles in half.
Working together, a group of state, federal, and local agencies formed a partnership to secure funding for this venture. Over $3,000,000 in state and federal funds has been secured to carry out the project.
Capital Corridor Partnership members include:
· California Department of Transportation, Division of Rail
· Amtrak (National Rail Passenger Corp.)
· Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority
· California Air Resources Board (CARB)
· Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD)
· Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD)
· Electro Motive Diesel, Inc. (EMD)
· U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 9

The modification not only makes the engine emit less pollution, it also increases efficiency, using less fuel. Gases that form smog and contribute to global warming also are reduced. Contractor Electro-Motive Diesel installed microprocessors and a high tech cooling system into an engine originally made in 2001, matching today’s 2010 technology levels. Jan 1, 2010: Public / Private Partnership works to improve SanFramento Air Quality:
The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD) E85 Program and 7 independent fuel distributors collaborated in developing a postcard which provides motorists with a map of all E85 fuel stations in the Sacramento area.
SMAQMD worked with DMC Green, Scotties Gas Station, Interstate Oil Company, Flyers (Nella Oil), Pearson Fuels, Propel, and Green Wave Fuel (Tooley Oil) to make this important project happen.

E85 is an alcohol fuel mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, by volume. Ethanol is derived from crops (bioethanol) and is a biofuel. Ethanol is a renewable resource and the use of E85 results in reductions of greenhouse gas emissions and energy use for each gallon burned, compared to the emissions and energy use for the gasoline it replaces. E85 should only be used in vehicles designed to operate on this biofuel. A list of E85 ready vehicles is at FlexFuel Vehicles

The 7 providers who installed systems in 27 retail and limited access card lock sites formed a consortium to jointly notify the public about the availability of E85 in our region. With the completion of this infrastructure, the Sacramento region now has the highest concentration of alternative fuel ethanol sites in California.
Gas stations with E85 are located in West Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, Davis, Woodland, Elk Grove, Fairfield, Galt, Sacramento, Vacaville, North Highlands, Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Rocklin, and El Dorado Hills. To get a copy of the E85 locations map, cut and past this link into your browser http://sacberc.org/E85.pdf
The City of Sacramento, Department of General Services and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) also installed E85 at their fueling stations for their private fleets.
